Overtime and holidays in Japan vs. the West: Why the gap?
Fascinating, if slightly roughly written discussion of why European and US companies function despite the fact that employees don’t work overtime and are free to take vacations, while Japanese firms force workers to put in extra hours for free and have a culture that frowns on holidays. (Spoiler: it’s down to unrealistic demand expectations set by Japan’s corporate managers, and a focus on serving the nitpicking 1% of the customer base instead of the 99% with more normal expectations. The resulting gap has to be bridged, in effect, by unpaid work.) (Hat tip to @sarasa: https://twitter.com/sarasa/status/21459514184)
