The DVIEW, a card-sized PC which includes a recycled cellphone LCD that should bring the overall cost down to Y20,000-Y30,000. The maker’s site looks to have been Slashdot Japanned, but the Hokkaido Shimbun has a photo and some details (in Japanese). Essentially, you get a CPU, 40Kb of SRAM (there’s support for SD cards and FlashROM), a 320x240 display, 2-channel/16-bit stereo audio output and MP3/MIDI/ADPCM support, plus a bunch of peripherals that make things like video output and USB and LAN connectivity happen. Throw in a cool casemod and a bit of software hacking and this could be quite interesting.
