Executions should happen without Minister's signoff (Nikkei)
Justice Minister Kunio Hatayama, perhaps feeling the stress of having to get the execution pipeline unblocked after his predecessor’s refusal to send anyone from Death Row to the gallows, is suggesting that the requirement for the minister to sign off on each execution should be discarded. “It would be wrong to say we need a conveyor belt [Ed: you just did], but if we could switch to some objective method like a random-number system that would allow things to progress automatically, we wouldn’t have this debate about who’s going to be next,” he opines.
